David Dorn: Symbol of Black People Against Crime.

The murder of 77 year old retired St Louis, MO., police captain David Dorn this month was a special punch in the gut feeling reserved for Black men and women slain fighting the good fight in written off urban areas.

Another gut punch came in July, 2019, as a double homicide of a pair of Chicago women, Chantelle Grant and Andrea Stoudemire, part of a mothers street patrol which occupied trouble spots to quell violence and offer hostage residents safe passage. They were killed where they stood watch as a warning to other community crusaders.

I shouldn't have to say it but it must be said: the inner city has concerned citizens too. Elite liberal television producers and newspaper editors don't give community crusaders as much coverage as they do negativity making crusaders necessary in the first place. Our community crusaders constitute the best kept secret in Black America.

My grassroots security consulting started beside frightened inner city residents whose crime concerns I took to often disinterested decision makers. Inspiration was drawn from heroic fiction and real life heroes like anti crack cocaine activist Herman Rice  and Eastside High School principal Joe Clark, immortalized by actor Morgan Freeman in the 1989 movie, "Lean on Me."

My own urban safety battle makes me appreciate slain community crusader David Dorn even more.

Well into retirement age, the late captain nonetheless kept serving and protecting. He died securing a pawn shop from armed looters misusing the Minneapolis death of George Floyd to pillage their city.

Mr. Dorn's life represents what real brothers and sisters do: fight crime by providing protection and prevention services. In addition to doing law enforcement and private security, he mentored youth and even counseled those he arrested. Such largeness of spirit is what captive communities need to displace negativity.

David Dorn is a symbol of Black people, and Americans period, against crime.
